Buckets and Threads - Guidelines for Forecasters

1. Put intelligence into easily found buckets - Discussions

We have a few already - like KIDS – so post in that discussion if about young people’s behaviour in the creative economy

2. If your intelligence needs a new bucket, start a discussion

Buckets could include

Market Segments

• Kids/young people (others if they are interesting to the forecasters forum)

Media

• mobile media
• social networks
• (others if they are interesting to the FF eg tv, film, visual arts, design etc)

Economic political social and cultural trends

• creative industries (others if interesting)

others as we find interesting..

Interesting article in yesterday's Guardian around mapping out trends in the world's innovation hubs - nice to see Bristol on the global map but wonder why Scotland is yet to have a look in as a hot spring. Also although the research appears to have considered several variables the map is based on the number of patents granted - is this really the most appropriate measurement to decide on where these innovation clusters lie? http://tinyurl.com/beytnk

Good forum idea - right up my street anyway.
In the spirit of debate, and to temper some of the boosterism that Anne refers to, a recent report from Deloitte provides challenging forecasts for the media sector in 2009. Despite its positive message about ongoing demand for media, it highlights significant commercial pressures in areas like social networking, user generated content, print media and mobile TV. Although forecasting in the current climate is obviously risky, there are important messages here about the need for realistic business models for new digital media. Its also interestingly upbeat about some 'older' technologies - 3D movies, analog radio, mass audience TV and the good old text message.

latest NESTA analysis suggests that between 2009 and 2013 the UK creative industries - which is responsible for films, music, fashion, TV and video games production - will grow on average at 4% - more than double the rate of the rest of the economy. By 2013, the sector is expected to employ 1.3 million people, likely to be more than the financial sector.
