Fantastic Immediate Opportunity for budding PR person (not a boring leafleting position).

Fantastic Immediate Opportunity for budding PR person (not a boring leafleting position).

We are looking for a young, enthusiastic bright spark to start working immediately with our close team at Impressive PR, from now until the end of the Edinburgh Festival.

The position is unpaid and hard work but will give you access and insight into the intense and exciting world of Festival PR as well as providing many useful contacts for the future!

You will be working 7 days a week at irregular hours and will work closely with our acts and members of press, as well as having important administrative duties.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work with one of the UK’s leading PR companies that needs to be filled immediately. [For more information go to www.impressivepr.com]

Previous experience of PR, Press Management or Front of House work helps, but is by no means essential. You will learn a lot whilst on the job! However, it is useful if you have your own laptop.

Travel expenses within Edinburgh will be reimbursed and you will have the opportunity to see many fantastic festival shows.

Please note we are extremely busy during this period and therefore will only be contacting potential interviewees.

Please send your CV or some information about yourself to Georgia[dot]artus[at]googlemail.com with the subject: ‘Press Assistant Position’.

Apllicants must be over 18.

Hi Georgia ,

Read your post and because it was recently a live discussion over on the UKpress list, thought I should alert you to the fact that your advert looks as if it might be in breach of the law on National Minimum Wage. here

I dare say the experience would be great, but I think it is also no longer legal to specify the age - even in general terms - of an employee.

Just looking out for you - and the employee who is expected to work seven days a week at any time of the day or night for no money.

Best regards,

Richard
RIchard, while I see your point, I think Georgia's equally covering herself from being flooded from older school children who may fancy this - especially as many school's now try to get their pupils to do work experience. Also, many of the venues are over-18s only.

As for minimum wage, that's an old debate but the sad truth is that in industries where there are more people wanting in than jobs - the magazine sector is another one - there will always be people offering internships at no pay.

I understand your point Craig, about the unregulated nature of supply and demand in general. But the facts are that we don't live in an unregulated labour market. The rules on National Minimum Wage and Age Discrimination were set up as enforcable laws not guidelines. I am sure Georgia will find her person but I feel it's legitmate to express some concern at her use of 38Minutes as a platform on which to advertise a role the terms of which seem to be in contravention of the law - just saying!
Good evening gents.

Thanks for your comments, very useful to know! I was asked to put up the ad on behalf of the company and it details the same month long intern process that they've been using for the Edinburgh festival for many years (in fact, it's how I started with them!) so I will pass the messages on. I'm sure they wouldn't want to do anything illegal, I think they were just trying to be completely open about what the position entails as it's a tough life doing Festival PR (I'm almost asleep just writing this and I still have another 8 hours to go today!).

The age restriction is solely due to the fact that you would not be able to complete the tasks of the job if you were under 18 as you could not gain access to many of the sites where the tasks need to be completed. In a similar way to some delivery companies specifiying that applicants must have a drivers licence.

We've now found someone to fill the position (hurrah!), and we'll be sure to take extra care of her. :-)

I'm out and about a lot at the moment so if you have any more comments please email me on georgia (dot) artus (at) googlemail (dot) com as I'll be able to answer much more quickly!
