New games - new SG.biz

[Shameless plug] Following the success of 38Minutes and brazenly copying the cool digital media people hereabouts, I've just changed the scottishgames.biz website from a Typepad blog, to a NING ring. GROUPS! FORUMS! RSS EVERYWHERE! It's the 21st century in all it's glory!

Design still underway, but I thought I'd let everyone know and get things moving sooner rather than later.

Now, if I can only figure out how to try and link ning rings together...

New editorial, new analysis and more posts t… Continue

Got A View On Videogames?

Just a quick pointer to a post on Scottishgames.biz (and handily mirrored on the group of the same name, here on 38Minutes...)

The Department of Culture, Media & Sport's consultation into the Byron Report ends on the 20th of November.

They're looking for input on the current ratings system, both the mandatory side, which is overseen by the BBFC and the industry-drive… Continue

Do You Dream In Colour

I thought this was rather fascinating. Based on research at Dundee Uni (but found via Boing Boing):

Do you dream in black and white? If so, the chances are you are over 55 and were brought up watching a monochrome television set.

New research suggests that the type of television you watched as a child has a profound effect on the colour of your dreams.

While almost all under 25s dream in colour, thousands of over 55s… Continue

We Want... Information!

Or at least I do. A question which cropped up a few times at yesterday's 4IP networking event was - where do I find out more about all these interesting companies?

Which is a fair point. While Scotland has several news services, publications and sites dedicated to specific sectors (AllMediaScotland, Scottishgames, The Drum, Young Company FinanceContinue

One of my students, Jérôme Challet, has, he sez, put an application into you and he asked me to put a word in too. So, here goes. Jérôme is at the extreme end of enthusiasm to create games. He is a mature student, by a couple of years, who kept coming to see me, sent me his work, emailed me, etc. before he started the CGT course.

His work for me is always in the top 10%-ile. Where other students have struggled Jérôme seems to get A's, usually giving me more than I asked him for.

He is strongly into game design too. Indeed, if pressed he'd say that this is his real strength of interest. He sometimes UWS frustrating as we don't go fast enough for him (Skillset might be holding us back, IMHO.)

So, that's my few words. Its easily said, but I don't say these things easily, Jérôme has the makings of a significant developer, certainly one of the best students I have seen in my ten years training games developers. And I honestly wouldn't say that if I didn't mean it. There are only two other students on the 50 in his year who fall into the same category.

I hope this helps. I was in Dundee for GiS Saturday last. So nice to see a blue sky and feel the North Sea freeze again ...

Keep Well. John S.

Thanks Brian!

We've just heard the game scored 8/10 in latest issue of EDGE- which is fantastic considering their legendary harsh review policy.

We're also about to announce another big game in the next week or so- I'll keep SG.biz up to date when it happens.
