Tudocs Productions

What is TuDocs Productions?

Very busy bunch of busy bees (careful how you say that!) with a bunch of projects we hope will be useful and which we hope to make money from.  Me, I teach games development at the amorphous UWS, run TuDocs Ltd, preach at BEC and do some learning at Tilsley.

TuDocs are doing:

  • a children's visual novel series for iPad
  • an e-learning game series for a partner in Weegieland
  • a computer games journal with content developers might actually want to read
  • helping newbies get real and get jobs in games development

Students Getting Real?

16 years on from starting the world's first games degrees in Dundee, I continue to fight the Demons Of Stupidity to help students get real and get developing games.  The latest front is being launched in September!  We will be, with other games developers, helping UWS 3rd & 4th years games students create tablet and advergames in internship-like programmes.

The week the world changed, forever ...

I've just had one of the weeks when what was previously the accepted order did an Oktoberenskia Revolutzioni. You know the scene - or don't - the week starts in Status Quo, and ends in Black Sabbath. Too many metaphors?

Allow me to tell the tale ...

First I got an email that the course I externally examine on at Wales University has been cancelled, by the Welsh Government. Seems they think there are too many trivial courses -… Continue

TuDocs finally gets a decent website

Getting a new digital media company off the ground, whilst holding down a full-time job, is hard work. Problem is, how to do both at the the same time, when you need money and need to create product.

So, seven months into the TuDocs project, we have three things going: our games career website, an iPad game, and a book on games careers. Eight people working away - all with… Continue

Changes to TuDocs jobs listings

To encourage newbies to create strong e-portfolios, as requested by games and digital media companies, the jobs and internships pages at TuDocs.org have gone exclusive.

You need a decent e-portfolio to get noticed. 30 seconds is the first glance they'll give you, then another 2-3 minutes max. Nobody will spend time looking at poor quality work. Get good. Get real. Get… Continue

Video Gamer takes on The Elite and The Powerful ... and loses ...

RIP Scottish Games - Fall 2010. Like General Patton, I was there. Where? I was there when Scotland burst onto the video games industry scene as a major player with Lemmings, I played GTA before it was launched, saw Hedz crash and burn, witnessed the rise and fall of Red Lemon, Visual Science, DMA and many others. An industry from Alpha to Omega; beginning and end.

Around the time I am writing and you are reading, major… Continue

Hi Dr John, Just to let you know I am back at uni and have just started the Honours year but intend to keep looking for work just not as furiously!

That sounds good. You have any ideas on implementing it somewhere on the courses? As for scratch ain't done anything in it for this year we selected pygame so hopefully gain some valuable experience there. Though structures and Algorithims is hard its proving to be an invaluable asset for my coding ability. Looking to gather up some more free time nearer the end of semester so portfolio, portfolio portfolio!!

Hi John, thanks for your note on your wosgamers network regards the SOCCERBET game, looks like your students are too studious (or not gamblers) - changed from my day !
Can you maybe suggest other sites where I could get a review - I'm finding this to be a major obstacle at the moment.
Cheers.
Paul
PS Have a good weekend.

John, that would be absolutely great, just the kind of market feedback I'd be interested in (both good and bad), but please have a go yourself too.
These games are effectively Season 08/09 Editions, I like the idea of new games for next season and the one after etc, plus the evolution (with not a lot of work) of other European league games.
Cheers.

John, thanks for the feedback. This game actually originates from a second year project I did whilst studying Computer Science at Strathclyde back in the early 80's, basically for my end of year project I did a simulation (in Pascal) of the 1982 World Cup finals in Spain.
After that, a league game evolved and here we are now.
Had an original "ugly looking" version of this on the market back in 1991 (Shareware etc), and its been lying dormant in my minds eye until now.
Actually had meeting with two of the bookmakers back then with no take-up, virtual betting has of course since been realised, big time.
There is no real data used, the game is purely based on weighted randomness, ie the team's home and away ratings are crucial when generating a match result.
If you visit the website www.soccerbetgame.com you'll see a Champions League, English Premiership and fantasy British Premiership version available.
All 4 games have their own Leaderboard page and prize fund for the best game submitted (basically you start with £500 and if you can finish the game with £50,000 or more then the game will create a game file which you can then send in) as at end of July. That was where I hoped would be a take-up, ie competing against other folk and trying to win the prize fund.
I think the game is pretty realistic - please have a go at one or more of the demos initially.
Funnily enough I was hoping to appeal to the student market !
What do you think ?
Cheers.

Hi John, I'm looking to share expertise/collaborate with gaming folk, from an IT career in corporate land I've recently completed my new game (for the PC) and website. Keen for any feedback.
