I'm an Edinburgh-born, Glasgow-based freelance journalist. I'm always on the lookout for potentially interesting article ideas to successfully pitch to newspapers and magazines, and I'm sure what many of you are doing could be the 'hook' to hang some journalism on!  Also, if you need some help with putting sharp, effective press-releases and media information together, then I can help... and let you get on with doing what you do best! To find out more about me, and recent work, visit…See More

The Rise of the eBook

The shock of the new is quickly overcome by boredom. Frankly, I’m already fed up with the repetitive nature of media coverage when it comes to ebooks. Every news story is hooked on some latest sales record or notable publishing ‘landmark’; for example, Bloomsbury recently reported that worldwide sales of its ebooks have increased by around 1,800% in the last year, a record almost certainly to be broken during 2011, given that the first three months of the year have already matched two thirds of…See More

One Decade On

I’m not really the kind of person who looks back but, yesterday, I momentarily slipped back to 2001.Not physically, of course; that would be either pure science fiction, or an action and event so stupendously important to the history of the universe that I wouldn’t announce on a blog. Twitter, maybe, but not a blog. No, I was actually flicking through editions of The Scotsman published in early July 2001, in an attempt to track down the obituary I wrote for them about the composer and arranger…See More

Some Thoughts of Journalism and Fiction

"The difference between literature and journalism is that journalism is unreadable and literature is not read." (Oscar Wilde)

I am, professionally speaking, a journalist. OK, I’m not a reporter looking to doorstep my latest scoop – thankfully, I lack both the discipline and cutting hunger for that particular job. I don’t work for a big media organisation. But I do spend my time researching…

Redundant?

Monday The 13th. Not, perhaps, the title for a successful franchise of slasher horror films, but it has a certain aptness, personally speaking at least.

Monday 13 December 2010 was the day when I was made redundant by a company after some 12 years' employment.

Redundant; it’s not a nice word; check the dictionary and it comes loaded…

Hi Paul

Welcome to 38minutes – I hope you find the site useful. Please do look around and get to know the network. A few things you might wish to check out:

Blogs: The blogs are the most popular area of the site and are getting increasingly varied and interesting – we’d love to see more people writing so don’t be shy!

Groups: There are around 100 groups on here, ranging from specific companies to social events. It can be daunting trying to find the right ones for you, but if you click on the Groups tab you’ll find the most popular and busy are featured. Some new ones have been added recently: Flying Solo, for freelancers and new businesses, Swap Shop for the exchange of goods and services, and This way for talent, for people seeking work.

Comment: A new section featuring guest editorial.

Wanted: Also to be found under the ‘Jobs’ tab on the navigation bar, Wanted brings together hundreds of vacancies and opportunities from across modern media. If you join the group you’ll get regular emails highlighting the latest jobs – and of course you can add your own too.

Directory: A comprehensive list of companies on 38minutes, organised by specialism. Leave a comment on the wall if you would like to be listed.

If you have any questions/ideas, do drop me a line.

Best,

Nicola
