It pays to count: freemium and tracking impact

So it seems that social media is coming of age: the ning platform (AmbITion Scotland's network is run on it as well as this great network) has announced that they are changing from their freemium business model, and ning will now have to be paid for. AmbITion Scotland and 38Minutes already pay the premium version, so we won't be closing up shop.… Continue

The Illusion of Permanence

Andrew Nuttney recently released a 160 page review of "Social Networking Market Opportunity."

It lies along the lines of several other publications focusing on marketing opportunities within social media, but also carries a critical tone which I found refreshing. As careers and personalities are being leveraged in the poker game that is social… Continue

Keeping it Simple

Assume many of you will have seen the fabulous range of iconic Scottish screenprints of Tunnock's Teacakes, Creamola Foam and Plain Bread by artist Gillian Kyle. The foil prints are particularly lovely.

I (un-necessarily) chose to re-invent mine at the weekend and it is now the most gorgeous appropriately squishy cushion with pewter metallic fringing that would make Nancy Smillie green with envy.

Here's the… Continue

Wanted: A clever logo for #scotlandspeaks

#scotlandspeaks is an online campaign, focussed mainly on Twitter, to allow Scots to add their voice to the UK leaders debates which will shape the outcome of the current general election. It started out as a protest against the exclusion of the SNP. Now it more of a movement that allows people of all political perspectives and none to comment about issues affecting Scotland. Today we were the second most trending topic on Twitter in the UK -… Continue

Muvizu updates with election assets

Muvizu, the free character animation app, has updated its Beta version with political assets. It's a green-light for 3D election satire as Cameron's forehead, Brown's lazy eye and er, Clegg's, er, hair (?) all become available for use. In truth we've added dozens more attachments and props along with political logos and some boring but important performance improvements.

Muvizu is a free application that lets you create 3D animated… Continue

Here We Go Again...

Morning folks. First update in a while from me. I've been off, being a busy and productive member of Denki up in Dundee. Sadly though, they had to let a great many people go a couple of weeks ago. The company will go on and the new game, Quarrel, *will* come out (even if I have to kill someone to make it happen), but I'm no longer an official part of team Denki.

Soooo, there are several *insanely* talented programmers and artists (plus a… Continue

Recession Shows Declne in Digital Media Spend

KPMG’s Media and Entertainment Barometer showed consumer spending on digital media almost halved over the past six months, with ‘traditional’ media spend down just under 20%. However, time spent consuming media has risen sharply, with traditional up from 11h 40m per month to 12h 13m, and digital up from 6h 14m to 7h 28m. KPMG head of media David Elms said the figures “illustrate the problem faced by the media sector in curbing the structural… Continue

Ashmageddon and beyond.

The hyperbole has yet again smashed through the apoplexy barrier with some of the comments and headlines surrounding the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokul volcano, the name still sounds vaguely like a Glaswegian threat to me, 'Aye-ya-fjalla-yokel'.

There are doom laden predictions of Europe's economy set to be in tatters, it could last years, it's a health risk, we're all going to die etcetera. Most alarming was the news that the… Continue

Ryancare... imagine Ryanair running public services

The following I saw today in Senscot's ebulleting (the Scottish Social Entrepreneur Network)- written by Lawrence DeMarco (Co-founder and Director)...

"Ryanair has confirmed that it is to charge for the use of toilets on its flights; a spokesman says that they hope to change our behaviour – so that we use the toilet before and after flights. This ‘toilet training’ remark is so insulting that it makes me wonder if Michael O’Leary enjoys winding us up. His cavalier attitude towards… Continue
