Hotbed of Genius

To celebrate Scotland’s Year of Homecoming in 2009, ITI Scotland (in conjunction with the Edinburgh Science Festival) hosted an authoritative discussion on Scotland’s innovative future. With a panel chaired by BBC Science expert Quentin Cooper, and featuring leading players in Scottish innovation, the debate was opened with a keynote speech by the world-renowned futurist and strategist, Rohit Talwar to outline the latest in innovative global… Continue

Another Exciting Company in Scotland

One of an occasional informal posting about the cool things I see every other day.

My job allows me to connect with some of the most exciting and energising people and companies on the planet - and they are right here in Scotland. I recently visited fellow "38 Min -iter" Giles Lamb of Savalas Sound. The company specialises in all aspects of sound production for film, tv and games, and operate from the Film City Glasgow building in Govan - a stones throw from the Ibrox tube… Continue

Do Scottish cities offer new economic hope?

BBC News today reports on an HSBC forecast which predicts that Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee are set to become the new business hubs of the UK. Nice to hear some positive news about the capital following the collapse of the financial sector!

And what industry will be leading the charge? None other than gaming. See the full story here.

Do you cybersquat?

A recently published article on Brand Republic stated that, as of 27-May-09, 33 of the 40 Britain's Got Talent semi-finalists domain names have been registered (both .com and .co.uk) only about 3 being registered previously by the contestants. Similar story with Twitter accounts, including the infamous Susan Boyle.

There are two forms or reasons why people cybersquat.… Continue

Twitter chatter

Whether it be a fad or not, Twitter is everywhere right now and seems to be picking up, wanted by its users or not, visibility and user numbers. People outside the usual tech savvy, easy UI circle are starting to latch on to the 'latest' communication tool. I have heard it on mentioned on several prime-time television… Continue

New National Theatre Wales launches - with online social network

NTWning

The new National Theatre Wales has just launched with an online presence that is a social network.

My environmental sustainability company, Envirodigital, worked with NTW on their digital strategy, and we recruited Cardiff-based social media developers Native to bring the approach alive. The idea was to produce the new theatre company's audience organically… Continue

SICamp: My favorite submissions

So unless you've been under a rock lately (or not in the Tech scene in Edinburgh), you will know that the Social Innovation Camp is rolling into town.

I've submitted two ideas of my own: GiveKnitting.org and Girls in Tech.

But I've been keeping an eye on the other entries, and wanted… Continue

Please ensure that @300miles doesn't come up short:

Marc thanks for your post about the challenges of converting tweets into donations.

This was originally going to be relegated to a comment on yours, but I felt it might be more appropriate if my observations had a separate airing all of it's own.

Volunteer Management: How the Moonwalk gets it right

I was driving into Edinburgh today and spotted someone training for the Moonwalk - the lady was the first person this year I saw training for the walk, and prompted me to write this post.

For people that have never heard of the Moonwalk, here's the basic idea: take 10,000 men and women, get them to walk a full marathon (26.2 miles) or the half marathon (13.1 miles) in a brightly decorated bra to raise money for breast cancer. If you… Continue

Converting Tweets into Donations

I've been helping Mike Coulter and Jon Mountjoy strategize and raise money for the intrepid firefighters currently engaged in the 300 miles trek. Sadly, while some 400-odd people are following them on Twitter, and one or two large-scale re-tweets have gone out, their actual donation income has been rather thin. So the question arises: is Twitter an appropriate… Continue

Processing Chunks all done

My Collaboration with the Open University Mass Writing Project has came to an end and I will sorely miss it! I ended up writing 3 chunks and programs for the book, which is about using the Processing IDE, to design graphical sketches as applications and applets.

My contributions were for chunks 16, 46 and 79.

Chunk 16 is a random pattern generator which is used to demonstrate how to program in Java/Processing using fundamental constructs such as arrays, case statements and… Continue

PICamp is in Belfast on Tuesday 26th May

There are only a few places left for Slugger O'Toole's PICamp in Belfast on the afternoon of (next) Tuesday the 26th May.

Some of the questions that people will be asking:

- Northern Ireland - what would Obama do?

- How citizen photographers and journalists can alter politics ie directly influence politicans and their policies

- Removing the… Continue

"Users will sign in..." Will They? Identity, Trust and Your Idea

With nearly every idea submitted to 4iP comes the requirement that our future user "will sign up for the service". Having seen the complexity that comes with getting, storing, using and reusing that information, I've found myself on nearly every occasion asking myself (and the startup or indie): "Why?".

The reasons provided boil down to two incredibly loaded words: identity and trust. Identity is seen by the creative or web developer as the means by which they will be able… Continue

THINK BIG NOW

Forget the media and the doomsayers, we live in exciting times and there are countless opportunities to do things differently, better and more economically.

This is a time for fresh ideas and new beginnings. Those who grasp them will prosper. Innovation must be constant because the world around us constantly innovates

For me, owning a small business that did well in the good times was never going to be a passport to recession survival. Business does not receive loyalty points or… Continue

Putting social media to the test (putting 38 Minutes to the test)

I've been invited to talk to a bunch of advertising folk about "Social Media". Nothing like a narrow, focussed brief to get the creative juices flowing eh?

I'm on at 4.30 on a Friday afternoon so the aim is to be entertaining and informative in equal measure.

I also know for a fact that there endures an abiding sense in large sections of the advertising community that "you still can't beat a great ad".

I'm… Continue

A Refresher in the Core Principles and Value of Brainstorming

I've delivered a number of creative thinking workshops recently and when we look at brainstorming ideas, most people quite happily claim to be fully familiar with the process and frown at my dumb question of checking if they are aware of the actual process of brainstorming. It's at this point, I sometimes refer to my faithful old tried and trusted handout based on the fantastically simple work of Alex Osborne. Given the current climate of the absolute… Continue
