Some Thoughts of Journalism and Fiction

"The difference between literature and journalism is that journalism is unreadable and literature is not read." (Oscar Wilde)

I am, professionally speaking, a journalist. OK, I’m not a reporter looking to doorstep my latest scoop – thankfully, I lack both the discipline and cutting hunger for that particular job. I don’t work for a big media organisation. But I do spend my time researching…

Follow your pecker my son

It used to be that older men advised younger to follow their hearts, but it seems they might have been engaged in a metaphorical conceit because what they actually followed was further down their anatomy. Actually that might be further up their anatomy - in their minds - where they still believed…

Digital Panto: unique launch today in Scotland (oh yes it is!)

There have been interesting experiments this year where filmed performances have been distributed digitally live (think NTLive! simulcasting to cinemas), and on-demand (think digitaltheatre.com). But what about making work…

Redundant?

Monday The 13th. Not, perhaps, the title for a successful franchise of slasher horror films, but it has a certain aptness, personally speaking at least.

Monday 13 December 2010 was the day when I was made redundant by a company after some 12 years' employment.

Redundant; it’s not a nice word; check the dictionary and it comes loaded…

Renegade snowman building with Old Man Mirthy

A short film i made last year documenting the building of a snowman in the central bowling green in Hyndland/Partickhill. Under the cover of darkness, myself and three flatmates gave rise to Old Man Mirthy. Unfortunately, foxes and the sun bring our snowman to his ultimate end.…

In from the Cold

I first read and enjoyed John Le Carre’s book ‘The Spy Who Came In from the Cold’ many years ago. Since then I’ve probably re-read it a couple of times.

But I never really got the essential point of the book until I saw the film version starring Richard Burton – and one short scene in particular of only a few seconds screen time. The penny dropped and I understood the emotional narrative at the heart of the work.

Sometimes… Continue

6 Tips on How to Deal With Negative Comments on Blogs, Twitter or Facebook

astroturfing

It’s not really an excuse to say your business didn’t know and it’s not an excuse for your employees to say they didn’t know. If you or your employees are interacting with the public on-line, you have to be transparent. It’s not acceptable to pretend to be an unbiased member of the public. It's called astroturfing and it's illegal.…
