The topic of citizen journalism, old/new media has been a favourite topic of mine this past week after Jeff Ullman mentioned the “death of newspapers” in his talk. To my surprise, the Guardian announced that they are building a blog focused on local media, and for some unknown reason, has chosen Leeds, Edinburgh and Cardiff. Plus, they are advertising for a position of a local blogger! And we’re not just talking about “pay per blog” type of job – but a real job. With money attached. In fact, it’…

In the past week, I’ve been working on an interactive mortgage guide as part of an entry into the Touch Finance Competition.
After speaking to users, and looking at FSA regulations, here is one solution to making it easier to choose the perfect mortgage for you :)
"The Interactive Mortgage Guide is designed to take advantage of the multi-touch capability of Microsoft Surface to help you make sense of the variety of mortgage options available. The Natural User Interface (NUI) enables us to giv…

As some of you know already, I've been working on mypolice.org - a website allowing the public to give feedback to the Police.
We were pretty excited when
the Times decided to write a piece on us for this sunday's paper. What resulted was this:
"Police leaders have warned that a new website allowing the public to criticise the service could be hijacked by troublemakers"
followed by ...…

So, its the end of Day 1 at the first Scottish Social Innovation Camp. The idea is to take 6 back-of-the-envelope ideas, add lots of people, then try and make it happen over 48 hours. The point is to take ideas that could potentially create social change by connecting people through the web.
This is the 3rd SICamp, and this time round, the 6 ideas are:
Citipedia-An online public town planning tool.
Ex-Changing Places ->
Weedayout -Google Maps mashup to map disable toilet faci…

This is a little off-topic, but we’re excited about the announcement of the next Twestival! In case you were wondering what this is – besides a hybrid of the words twitter and festival – in a nutshell, its an event organised on twitter, by twitter types, for charity:
“In February 2009, Twestival leveraged the Twitter audience to raise more than $250,000 in the most ambitious Twitter fundraisin…

Hi everyone,
Bela Hamid, Thomas Drapier, Jessica Williamson and I have been working very hard lately and now we're ready to launch
StartupCafe:
"
We aim to be a fun and humorous place to go to for local startup news. We’ll be offering you an alternative commentary of tech, startup and social media news; along with announcements of jobs, events and competitions (all with a dose of silliness). As if that’s not enough, we’ll also be showcasing local st…

GiveKnitting.org and
Girls in Tech.
But I've been keeping an eye on the other entries, and wanted to talk about my fav…

I was driving into Edinburgh today and spotted someone training for the
Moonwalk - the lady was the first person this year I saw training for the walk, and prompted me to write this post.
For people that have never heard of the Moonwalk, here's the basic idea: take 10,000 men and women, get them to walk a full marathon (26.2 miles) or the half marathon (13.1 miles) in a brightly decorated bra to raise money for breast cancer. If you haven't seen it,…

In a month's time, I'm packing up and heading towards the West Coast of Scotland onto Islay for the
Education2020 Unconference.
The unconference is going to be in the same style as BarCamp, and although I haven't worked extensively in e-learning; I'm interested enough to go up, listen and participate in the conversation. It will be interesting to hear what people think the future of education would be like. Personally, I'm intr…
