38minutes

The infamous Stephen Wells, the frenetic post-punk writer from the NME has died of lympahtic cancer. Swells aka Seething Wells, was a colleague of mine at the NME, in the paper's hey-day, and many vintage 38minutes members will remember his emotional rants against the system, sugar-coated pop and conniving politicians. He was a blogger before the blogosphere, a one-man fanzine, and a truly good human being.

RIP Swells you were a one-off, and the world is a tamer place without you.

Tributes to Swells are already gathering on a Guardian blog here.

I got an email from my brother yesterday morning. It said 'Farah Fawcett, Steven Wells and Sky Saxon have all died today. What a strange day for dying.' An hour later I saw the first rumours of Michael Jackson's death on Twitter. Very strange day.
