In the latest SmartBrief on Social Media, I’ve gleaned articles on everything from Charlie Sheen’s surge to 1.5 million followers on Twitter and his personal brand’s potential for marketers to a piece in MIT Tech Review online on Yobongo and TapCity’s role in making location networking more social. Yes, I know, MIT. The common denominator is social media and it experimental and strategic use as a communications tool to engage and build online communities – the growth and culture of which Richard Millington shares his views on at FeverBee.com.
Anyway, the point is that social media is here to stay and that’s why Social Media Unleashed (SMU) has come about – by industry, for industry. The idea was conceived by Twintangibles and New Media Corp inspired by the recent Social Media Week. The hope is that this event will get more of us to collaborate in time for Social Media Week 2012.
Social Media Unleashed takes place on 17 March, at The Lighthouse, Glasgow, and will feature the first ever public keynote in Scotland by LinkedIn. Gartner is to give a rare public insight on social media strategy and Cisco will give an exclusive inside track on its use of social media. This is not for techies per se but for those needing to get their head around the potential of social media for their organisation. To break up the presentations, never a bad thing, there will also be informal, one on one speed clinics with these guys and others leading in this area.
Although the event is free, you need to register for SMU in advance as it is strictly on a first come first served basis, due to capacity of 150. So whether you’re an early adopter of social media, looking to hear from industry experts on how to use it more effectively, or still relatively new to it all and want to hear and see what others have done, get along to Social Media Unleashed; see you there for a chat and a glass of wine.

Comment by Arvind Salwan on March 16, 2011 at 14:26 Hi - as some folk have been asking, it's just to say that the event is indeed over-subscribed - yah-hey, sorry and boo-hoo all at once - but please do look out for a follow-up event - http://twintangibles.co.uk/events/
And, yes, Charlie Sheen now has 2m+ followers, perhaps prompted by the post on 38minutes?
