38minutes

One of an occasional informal posting about the cool things I see every other day.

My job allows me to connect with some of the most exciting and energising people and companies on the planet - and they are right here in Scotland. I recently visited fellow "38 Min -iter" Giles Lamb of Savalas Sound. The company specialises in all aspects of sound production for film, tv and games, and operate from the Film City Glasgow building in Govan - a stones throw from the Ibrox tube station.

Giles mentioned Savalas is the only Dolby Premiere certified sound production facility in Europe (had to check the website to make sure I got that right, I thought it was THX and maybe ruined their day! :) The soundtrack to a game through a Dolby spec'd cinema sound system has to be heard to be believed!

I'm a bit of a gearhead myself, so had a blether about RTAS plugins, Pro Tools, sound isolation, mic pre's and even had a wee crunch through some gravel in the foley studio. The facilities are truly first class. Starting to sound like an ad for the company here, but seriously worth looking at the companies website Thanks to Giles for showing me round.

As I said earlier - and without getting too gushy - I get to travel across Scotland and meet inspiring people and thier innovative businesses. We have people and offices all over the world, and I often send info such as this out to them. We also have GlobalScots, leading business figures with a connection to Scotland, and many are genuinely interested in the creative companies in Scotland, and are often able to help out with advice or support.

OK, the day job is filled with Government Economic Strategy, business plans and industry growth. But some face time with the companies is the best bit!

Ha ha Alec - I'm still drumming away, doing lots of recording in my converted garage studio. Hey - why don't we make an album of 38 Minutes artists?

OK, recovered from that dismal affair amongst the Bairns yesterday - you've got me evangelising again Stuart - if Jeff Buckley meets Philip Glass with a twist of Wilco floats yer boats...

Savalas have been a maninstay of post production in Scotland for many eyars now and its gerat to see them survive, thrive and gear-up. Infrastructure gets stronger by the month in Scotland and despite the significant challenges in broadband take-up and connectivity to more remote areas, there is no barrier to doing world class work for any global client.

Hope this doesn't mean more shite bands that George likes though.

Did you get the drumming gig though?

Hope all is well,

Alec
