Web 2.0 and UGC Legal Challenges

Tuesday 25th August 2009
0900 – 1200
227 West George Street, Glasgow G2 2ND

It was great to see several 38 minuters join us for our recent first workshop in our Legal Advisory Workshops (THE L.A.W. SERIES) - a series which aims to guide creative digital businesses through some of the current issues in digital media production and give them some of the answers. We are again teaming up with ‘legal eagles’ at Pinsent Mason to deliver a workshop which will examine common pitfalls of Web 2.0 and UGC.

Web 2.0 plays an increasingly active role in the day to day lives of a rapidly growing number of people and has enabled a host of new services and opportunities across a wide range of digital platforms. It is one of the most dynamic and rapidly changing markets. Users can easily upload their own online content and comments (UGC) that can be accessed, viewed and downloaded by other users around the globe which although creating exciting opportunities for users, presents many challenges to the ‘hosts’, especially relating to law and regulation.

This workshop will look at a variety of these challenges:

• Reputation and confidentiality
• Content ownership and licensing
• IP infringement - examples from social networking
• Defamation - examples from message boards
• Social networking generally - legal issues arising

Incorporating many examples from blogging, wikis, podcasting, social networking and message boards.

Places on this workshop will be limited to ten, please download the registration form from TRC's website www.trcmedia.org and return it to us to let us know you’d like to attend.

Just back from the workshop - it was touch and go if I could make it and I am glad I did. Well structured, informative, and professionally presented. it was a typical goldie locks affair not too much, not too little, just right. Even better, it changed my mind on a few assumptions I had. Now I am off to find that Southpark clip;)
