Looking for new avenues to explore, I entered the competition to design and produce the Glasgow Film Festival's trailer which, all going well, will be presented to cinema goers across Scotland and northern England in the weeks leading up to the GFF. After succesfully being shortlisted(woohoo!), I embarked on a convoluted journey through my disjointed ideas and inappropriate graphic devices before pulling myself from the jaws of defeat by distilling these elements into a ludicrously simple but effective approach. I managed to get the submission in just in the knick of time, and received the call that evening; I'd been selected! (cue round of applause)
The nature of the competition was quite unusual, each of the shortlisted designers openly discussed their work on the website (CentralStation) so the usual secrecy surrounding such competitions was absent. In some ways this was quite discouraging to me as I thought the other proposals were far more lightly to succeed! Dispite this, I managed to gather my thoughts and submit something that obviously struck a chord with the client. Another interesting element of the comp was the involvement of the nice people at ISO, who I owe thanks to for their suggestions and encouragement.
So, what's the big idea? Get yourselves over to
Central Station where you can check out all the proposals, their development, and my final submission that won the commission.
I have two weeks to bring the project to fruition so watch this space.
